SA first away win after nine successive defeats on the road

South Africa’s win by an inning and 63 runs before lunch on the third day against the West Indies over the weekend was their first away victory following nine consecutive away defeats since the second test at Nottingham against England at the Oval on their 2017 England tour.

The Proteas then also lost the fourth test, as well as both tests in Sri Lanka the following year. All three tests for the Freedom Trophy in India were then lost, as well as both away tests against Pakistan this year.

▲ Another interesting observation is that Dean Elgar, in this second test as captain, joined a small group of test skippers who led their side to test victory despite scoring no runs, taking no wickets and holding no catches in that test.
