For the first time in decades the Blue Bulls Rugby Union’s famous Carlton League will be expanding this year with Pretoria and Tuine joining the top level after being promoted.
Pretoria is the second oldest club in the old Transvaal after Potchefstroom Dorp.
Pretoria was established in 1888 (133 years ago) and has been revived through hard work after becoming defunct three years ago.
They will be fielding six teams in the BBRU’s leagues when club rugby resumes.
Tuine is a rugby powerhouse in the west of Pretoria and has been knocking on the Carlton League door for some time after being a vibrant, reckoned club many years go.
▲ In another plaudit for the union that made great strides at provincial level since first-class rugby was resumed late last year, the BBRU sub-union Limpopo and also BBRU Township clubs have for the very first time entered teams in the U-20 leagues.
Incredibly the player numbers of the BBRU clubs have increased from before lockdown.
“Growing our beautiful game remains a priority. Witnessing our plans bearing fruit during the last three years is extremely satisfying,” said BBRU president Willem Strauss in his regular ‘information’ communication with the press.
