Sexton's ongoing concussion could cost him place in Lions team

Ongoing concussion symptoms have left Irish captain Johnny Section unavailable for Leinster’s Champions Cup semi-final away to La Rochelle on Sunday.

The influential flyhalf left the field on April 10 against Exeter in the quarterfinal in the Champions Cup. This knock happened just two weeks after he had taken a blow to his head in the Pro14 Final win over Munster.

His unavailability for this weekend’s semi-final  announced on Tuesday and could scupper his chances for slection for the British and irish Lions.

A medical bulletin from the Irish province read: “Unavailable for selection, Johnny Sexton: will continue to train and be assessed as part of the graduated return to play process.”

With Dan Biggar in excellent form at Northampton and Owen Farrell and Finn Russell in respective action for Saracens and Racing, Sexton would have been hoping to be fit for the semi-final to make his final chance count for selection in the Lions squad that will be announced by Warren Gatland on May 6.
