Lions take no chances as they put their faith in experience

Three changes have been made to the winning Lions starting line-up for the Super Rugby encounter with the Stormers at Newlands on Saturday.

The teams has been boosted with three Springboks who have plenty of experience at Super Rugby level between them.

They are right wing Ruan Combrinck, open side flank Kwagga Smith who played in Japan in the off-season and Stephan Lewies, who has moved over from the Sharks.

Springboks wing Aphiwe Dyantyi is on the bench, with Sti Sithole, Gianni Lombard and Sylvian Mahuza newcomers on the bench.

There are 10 Springboks in the starting side and only one, Dyantyi, on the bench

♦  There are some interesting facts concerning four of the other Boks in the Lions team for Saturday:

  • Elton Jantjies played in his 107th match for the Lions last weekend, the most appearances by a Lions player. He extended his career points to 978. The latter tally, the most by a player, includes 9 tries, 231 conversions, 152 penalties and 5 drop goals.  Adding his 13 Super matches and 21 points for the Stormers he has scored now 989 points in 120 matches in Super Rugby. Elton could score his 1000th point in Super Rugby this weekend.
  • Three other Springboks, Lionel Mapoe, Courtnall Skosan and Malcolm Marx, all on 27 tries, have scored the most career tries for the Super Lions. They have played played in 94, 55 and 60 matches respectively.
