Lions boost as captain Whiteley is on his way to Australasia

The Lions medical team on Friday gave the go-ahead for the team’s inspirational captain Warren Whiteley to join the Lions in Australasia.

Whiteley was on a provisional list to join the side pending his recovery from a pectoral injury that has kept him off the field since the third round. He was injured in the Lions second match against the Stormers at Newlands on 22 February.

The Lions and Springboks No 8 will miss Saturday’s match against the Brumbies but will be available for next weekend’s match against the Chiefs and against Crusaders the week thereafter.

Malcolm Marx has been leading the Lions since Whitley's injury and questions were asked about his and the general team leadership after the 5-42 loss to the Sharks at Ellis Park last weekend.
