Lions flyhalf Elton Jantjies, who was dropped from the match-day squad for last Saturday’s match against the Stormers after breaching team protocol in Durban the week before, will be available for the crucial match against the Hurricanes at Ellis Park on Saturday.
Jantjies has been ‘reinstated’ after discussions with the Lions management, and his skills are needed for the crucial match. He trained with the side on Monday.
But then, there is no certainty that he will get his starting place back. His replacement against the Stormers, Shaun Reynolds, had an outstanding match – and it is noteworthy that the potent Lions backline had probably their best performance of the season with their potential decently utilised by the the 23-year old, rather inexperienced, flyhalf Reynolds who pulled the strings.
It may well be a case of coach Swys de Bruin deciding to follow the old- adage of not changing a winning team with Jantjies then starting on the bench.
The Lions need to win this match to make the play-offs. A win could see them in second place in the SA Conference if the other three SA franchises lose their respective matches this weekend.
And an experienced good one, De Bruin might argue, is better than a young good one without experience.
