Blitzboks through to the Sydney semi-final with a match still to play

The Blitzboks are assured of a place in the Sydney semi-final of the World Seven Series after beating last weekend's losing finalists France 24-12 in the Pool B match, with Angelo Davids scoring his second hat-trick in two matches.

Even a loss against Samoa in their last match will not be enough for the Blitzboks to be displaced as winners of Pool B, as the winner between two teams who are tied on the log will get the benefit of continuing ahead of the loser.

Samoa have lost both their matches so far and can therefore not draw even with the Blitzboks on the log even if they win their match, while Argentina, should they surprise France, will tie the South African side in the event that  Stedman Gans’ men lose to Samoa at 02:51 on Sunday in their last pool match. However, in that case the Blitzboks will also have the advantage by virtue of their win 52-14 win against Argentina in the first match.

As in the first match, against Argentina, the Blitzboks performance was a notch or even more above last weekend’s disappointing performances when they finished tenth in the Hamilton tournament.

The semi-finals on Sunday are to be played 07:20 and 07:22 after their last pool match against Samoa that kicks off at 02:51 on Sunday morning. They will play the winners of Pool C, home side Australia or die USA, in the semi-final.
